Summary: I chuckled a little, at least twice per episode. Schmigadoon! also gets an A for trying a musical-based series. They made fun of other musicals, which added a bit to the humor. But at the end of the day, the songs and musical numbers were just ho-hum. Unless the song was building on some of the jokes, the music was snoozy.
It is weird because I liked some of the setups and comedy bits. Like when Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) tries to ‘cheat” and cross the bridge with every woman in town, based on a tall tale from the wedding they attended. Another time, when a wife is singing about her man when he is gay, the joke is funning, but the song is blah.
In the end, Schmigadon! is a bit slow and unsurprising, which equals lackluster. The lack of catchy songs hurt the show. While I am glad I watched it, I wouldn’t recommend the show.
Plot: A struggling couple Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key), are hiking in the mountains and are transported to the musical world of Schmigadoon. Where they must find their true love to exit.
