Rating (3.5 out of 5)
Summary: This is an oddly paced, cute little murder mystery comedy that kept adding enough to keep me interested through all 11 episodes. What really works for the show is the dynamic between the three main characters; Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short). It wasn’t a combo I would have picked, but they meshed well. The banter and exchanges between them were humorous and genuine.
The setup for each episode is a voice-over, observing something about the city or life. The voice-over was a nice setup for the theme of the show. The other part of the show that resonated with me was them making a web sleuth blog. I have watched a couple of shows where these web sleuths are inserted to provide a feel of an investigation. Then they get crazy fans, which added to the bizarreness of web sleuths.
The pacing was a little off for me at times. The one that strikes me is when Charles and Jan (Amy Ryan) are starting to fall in love and play music across the courtyard with each other. It drags on too long, slowing what had been a good episode. There were moments like this in each episode. Fortunately, the episodes were fairly short so the pace picked back up again.
Not a groundbreaking show, but definitely light-hearted entertainment for an evening at home.
Plot: After Tim Kono (Julian Cihi) dies in the building, three strangers, Mabel, Charles, and Oliver, believe he was murdered and set out to solve the crime.
