It has been quite some time since I last posted. The concept of watching another blah movie or TV show and then writing a blog was wearing on me. It was unsatisfying to constantly write negative comments.
But it was and still is evident that the US movie industry lost its way. The creativity has hit an all time low. The content vomited from Hollywood is sequels, remakes or spinoffs of material we had already seen. Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Star Trek, MI, on and on it goes.
Even the stories themselves are cookie cutters. The Rom Com, the buddy movie, the action flick. There is nothing new or original about them. Even the stars aren’t new. Liam Nesson, The Rock, Mark Wahlberg, Tom Cruise…. Can’t we find a new young person to lead the way.
In this time to despair, I turned to video games, but even there, we are on repeat. New skin, but the same game.
I had written a while back, how many films were produced each year, and because of the volume we lost our focus on quality and creativity. It is easy to blame the streaming services, in their rush to generate content, they have sacrificed quality. But who is it who pays for these services; us and we pay for this drivel? We are to blame.
Apple, has taken a different approach, nothing sucks, but nothing is great. This all leads me back to the Oscars.
The the ultimate low was when CODA won the academy awards. CODA was a fine enough movie, but simply fine. There was nothing about it that was deserving of an academy award. I think back to all the movies that haven’t won in prior years, and any are 10 times better than CODA.
CODA was the safe vote, the safe movie to win. It was the politically correct movie to win. CODA is all white, but we have a minority with the deaf, so someone was appeased, but no one was offended.
I continue to watch TV shows and movies but not with the same passion. Today’s media offerings are a constant disappointment. Occasionally, a movie will be okay, worthy of a 3 out of 5 stars, maybe a 3.5. Nothing has been “Wow, you have to watch this.”
Looking at movie ratings, I am concerned that many reviewers are being paid (either that or they are complete idiots) or our baseline has changed. We are willing to accept a mediocre movie as good. Whatever the case is today, we are at an all-time low.
I will resume blogging, but differently than before but I am not sure what that is yet. My reviews will be short blunt and too the point.
